People in the Community Thematic Unit

Community Helpers

Are you a home school parent? Is it getting difficult to engage your child in their lessons? We have all been there, we get frustrated and want to throw in the towel. What if you could breathe new life into your family’s home school day? Here at Reading Escapades we have been homeschooling for eighteen years and have created thematic units based on our children’s interests. Our people in the Community Thematic Unit is one of our students favorites.

Maybe you are a parent looking to enrich your child’s education. Or maybe you are a teacher looking for a way to engage struggling learners.

Our lessons are perfect for teaching multi-age or multi-skill levels at one time. These units encompass math, reading, art, science, and social studies for children preschool through third grade.

Included in your lesson packet:

  • A Master Supply list for all of the activities in the packet.
  • Suggested Book List to accompany the activities.
  • Lesson Plans for each activity

Reading Activities:

Each thematic unit includes a set of focus words, reading games and writing activities. In our People in the Community unit your child can play memory, hide and seek and a board game to practice the thematic focus words. These are different than your typical sight words, but rather words that will excite your child. Our focus words for this unit are: police, nurse, firefighter, EMT, and soldier. Also, included in this packet are handwriting sheets for each of the focus words, creative writing, and an interview sheet.

We love playing with chemical reactions here at Reading Escapades and Math Explorers, our favorite is using vinegar and baking soda. We colored our vinegar to make it more like flames with food coloring. For math we have included options to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and even some fractions as part of our math lessons. these are perfect for the multi skill levels in your program.

We have learned that children need to express themselves creatively. For this reason, each thematic unit includes Creative Arts activities. These activities include art, music, and dramatic play. Our People in the Community unit has your child designing their own poster depicting their favorite community helper and their gear. A fun activity for your child to make their own nurse’s kit, this doubles as your child’s own first aid kit. To practice color mixing your child will create flames and a building. These are just a few of our art projects, also included are songs and finger-plays. Children of all ages seem to love sensory bins. We made this one with shaving cream and food coloring. We then used a spray bottle to put out the “flames.” These creative arts activities will keep your child entertained and learning for hours.

MappingGeography Activities

We try to incorporate as many disciplines as we can into each of our thematic units. In our People in the Community unit we have included a mapping activity. This pairs geography and children’s love affair with police officers. Children will be exposed to the variety of uniforms that police officers wear around the year.
